"name": "Census of business websites: counts",
"description": "Totals from a census of business websites that we are building by reading them one at a time: sites in the count by the state we searched, by trade and by grade, and why addresses never gave us a page we could count. No site is named and no address is included. Groups under 30 sites are folded into other. It is a sample, not yet a census: the addresses come mostly from OpenStreetMap, so it follows where volunteers mapped businesses with websites, leans heavily toward restaurants, and is thin in most states.",

"offer": "Two facts about how this file was built are published directly in it, not offered on request: the query template we sent OpenStreetMap (methodQueryTemplate) and the table that turns a map tag into a trade (methodTagMap). Two we do not yet publish: the list of city search areas, and the date each one was last read. Write to hello@truemeasurewebdesign.com if you need either.",
"method": "Website addresses and trade labels came from OpenStreetMap through the Overpass API, plus a small number of addresses found by web search. The map was searched inside areas drawn around United States cities from a public list of cities; a search area can cross a state line, so each site is counted in the state whose area it was found in, not by its postal address. A search area near a national border can also reach across it. There a site is labelled outside the United States when its map entry gives an address outside the United States, or, when its address names no country, state, province or postal code, when its point lies inside Canada on Canada's own province and territory boundary file (named in the notice below) and inside no state, the District of Columbia or any territory on the US Census Bureau's cartographic boundary file for the states. Mexico has no boundary file here, so a site in Mexico is placed only by an address that names Mexico. A map entry with a US address, or whose point lies inside a state, keeps a site in the United States, even when another of its entries is across the border. A labelled site is kept, and left out of every state and of the count; sites_outside_the_united_states_left_out says how many, chains among them (a chain outside the United States is counted there, not in chains_left_out), and the tables of addresses by state give those addresses a row of their own. Where the two boundary maps do not agree on the line, or where both countries claim the water, a site with no address could be placed on the wrong side. Not covered: 6,528 addresses from searches in border states whose map answers had not been read by this check on 2026-09-30 (Minnesota 2,080, New Hampshire 1,245, Maine 748, Idaho 727, Vermont 616, New Mexico 604, Alaska 260, North Dakota 110, Montana 86, Arizona 17, Texas 15, California 10, Ohio 9, Washington 1). So some sites near a border may still be counted in a state. Canada's boundary file: Adapted from Statistics Canada, Province and Territory 2021, Digital Boundary Files (DBF), January 1, 2021. This does not constitute an endorsement by Statistics Canada of this product. Licence: Open Government Licence - Canada, https://open.canada.ca/en/open-government-licence-canada. Each site in the count is the latest reading of its front page by our inspection engine, graded on the checks that applied to that page, up to 40 in the current engine. Chains (one website over many storefronts), our own calibration sites, and addresses a later reading found were no longer the business are left out. Trades read \"osm:\" plus a map tag where our engine has no trade of its own. Categories left out of every search on purpose: overwhelmingly national chains (supermarket, convenience, fuel, bank, department_store); public institutions (school, library, hospital, place_of_worship, townhall); nonprofits (charity, animal_shelter); and regulated or sensitive categories (weapons, erotic, gambling, cannabis, pawnbroker, money_lender). Changed on 2026-10-10: an address whose last reading was a security certificate our check refused is now counted as not settled, no longer as gone or broken, because that refusal alone does not show the site is gone. Two keys of never_answered_by_meaning were renamed to match: the one beginning \"Gone, broken or taken over\" no longer ends with the certificate, and the one beginning \"Not settled yet\" now names it. The gone_or_broken totals and tables leave those addresses out from that date. Full description: https://truemeasurewebdesign.com/insider/what-real-websites-taught-us/",
